Maven is a popular build tool for Java projects. It helps you manage dependencies, build and test your projects, and package them for distribution. Keeping Maven up-to-date is important to take advantage of the latest bug fixes and new features.
If you do not have Maven installed on your computer, then read How to install Maven on MacOS.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to upgrade Maven on macOS using three different methods:
- Homebrew,
- Manual installation,
- and SDKMAN!.
Method 1: Using Homebrew
I don’t upgrade Maven often, but Homebrew is my favourite tool to use whenever I need to.
Homebrew is a package manager for macOS that makes it easy to install and manage software. If you already have Homebrew installed, you can use it to upgrade Maven with the following command:
brew upgrade maven
If you don’t have Homebrew installed, you can install it by following the instructions on the Homebrew website (https://brew.sh/).
Method 2: Manual Installation
Another way to upgrade Maven on macOS is to download the latest version from the Apache Maven website (https://maven.apache.org/download.cgi) and install it manually. Here’s how:
- Download the latest version of Maven from the Apache Maven website
- Extract the downloaded archive to a directory of your choice (e.g.
/opt/maven
) - Set the
M2_HOME
environment variable to the location where you extracted the Maven files:
export M2_HOME=/opt/maven
- Update your
PATH
environment variable to include thebin
directory of your Maven installation:
export PATH=$PATH:$M2_HOME/bin
You can add these two lines to your shell profile file (e.g. ~/.bash_profile
) to make the changes permanent.
Method 3: Upgrading using SDKMAN!
SDKMAN! is a tool for managing software development kits on Unix-based systems, including macOS. If you already have SDKMAN! installed, you can use it to upgrade Maven with the following command:
sdk upgrade maven
If you don’t have SDKMAN! installed, you can install it by following the instructions on the SDKMAN! website (https://sdkman.io/).
Conclusion
In this tutorial, I showed you three methods for upgrading Maven on macOS: using Homebrew, manual installation, and SDKMAN!. Choose the method that works best for you, and make sure to keep your Maven installation up-to-date to take advantage of the latest bug fixes and new features.
